Noise dappening a bug
I have seen a couple of clips on YouTube of
people using "Quick Roof" as a cheap alternative
to sound deadening on VW bugs. Is this a good
idea? I have heard that this is an asphalt product
and should not be used in a closed environment because
it gives off bad gasses. Have any of the readers
used this?
Thanks
Dave

Most of the noise dampening stuff I've found that wasn't made for cars, isn't a good idea. Outgassing, or fire, or it comes apart if exposed to the kind of temps your car will have, etc. Your best bet is to buy the best automobile-rated stuff you can afford. The original VW stuff was pretty good, but if you want something better, check with car stereo installers and places that do car interoirs to see if they have anything available.

I looked up Quick Roof and got two answers: one was a roofing company that has gotten a bad rep and the other was a strip product which is what I think you are talking about. I also looked to see if there were any bad things on line about the product but since it is a roofing product, not an auto product, it seems to be OK for roofs
.
As I remember, auto manufactures did use a tar based product on the floors under the mats/carpets at one time to keep the exhaust heat from giving you toasted tootsies but since have moved away from using it (mandated?), probably because of the extra heat from the cats but then you don't have to worry much about that much heat under the floor with the engine in the rear.
You could throw money at your car using the Quick Roof product but then if it doesn't work that well that is money wasted that you could have used on the good stuff the first time rather than having to do it all over again.
If it were me, I think I would follow the advice that Stray Catalyst has given especially the part about the sound deadening that the audio guys are using (but remember, there is only so much of the whoom, whoom, whoom sound and vibrations that you can stop from coming out of the car too).

I have "fat mat" in my cars. It costs half of Dynamat and works pretty good. Ebay with free shipping usually. Aircooled.net also sells a similar product upon my advise.

I did a search on "the best sound deadening material for cars" and got quite a few answers but I did see the same materials coming up in all the opinions.

Turn up the stereo
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Actually, it's best to keep the bug original interior sound deading as is because it sound great while driving.... Puttering along, hearing and enjoying it's distinctive air-cooled engine sound.... That's the most enjoyable part of driving the bug.
Surely, it doesn't make sense if a "Harly" motorcycle owner were to muff-up it's world renown distinctive Puttering.
