What type of grease to use for front beam grease points?

Post by jeff740 »

Just wondering what is the right type of grease to use for the grease points on the front beam and how many grease nipples are there? I have a 1973 standard beetle.

Thanks :)

This may not be absolutely correct but, I have been using this grease in my aircooled Beetle for over twenty years:
DuraBlend® Synthetic Blend Grease

I use it for the front axle, ball joints, front and rear wheel bearings, and on one of the cv joints because
I did not have enough Meistersatz cv joint grease.
I also use it on the u-joints and front end of our F150 pickup.

Four grease zerks on a ball joint beam. Pump a bunch through so the old gets pushed/purged out past the seals in the end of the beam. Have news paper and rags ready to catch the old as it is purged.

If you have a needle tip for your grease gun you can also add a little grease to the ball joints and tie rod ends. They are sealed for life, but don't come with much grease when new.

You need just two types of grease for the bug - any good brand Lithium wheel bearing grease (I use Castrol LM or AXPT) for the front torsion bars, wheel bearings etc, and any good brand Moly (EP) grease (I use Castrol LMM) just for the CV joints. Wheel bearing greases come in various colours from different manufacturers, but Moly (EP) grease is always black in colour due to the molybenum disulpide in it. The reason they recommend Moly grease for the CV joints is that the balls/rollers don't rotate like a normal wheel bearing - even though the complete bearing is spinning, the balls just rock up and down in their grooves as the suspension works. EP grease works better in this type of application.

When greasing the 4 grease nipples on the front torsion bars, always jack the front wheels off the ground, or you wont get the axle tubes completely full of grease.

Where do you put the needle tip to grease the ball joints & tie rods ends? Photos would be nice also. :?

The springs that hold the rubber boots on are easily removed with a small pick and flat screw driver. Just squirt them full of grease then put the boot back on. Sometimes you can sneak the needle tip under the small end of the boots without having to remove the boot.

I'll give that a try when I get a chance.
