the frenchie

Post by protofuria »

hi guys!

My name's Morgan, 32 y/o french guy.

I own two beetles : one is a 1979 currently under restauration and modifications into an offroad beetle (no turbo on this one)

the other one is a 1970 with a 1699 turbo engine.

engine specs :

forged Mahle 1600 pistons
I-beam CB rods
74mm stroke crank
machined for full flow
CB additionnal oil carter
3 angles valve seats, double valve springs
1.25 lifters
280° camshaft 108° lobe center

T3 turbo from a Renault 18 turbo (also Renault fuego turbo)
solex 32 DIS carburetor from the same car
Renault GT turbo intercooler

home made header, cherrybomb muffler.

Image

everything fits under the rear apron and I still can close the lid.

The turbo is currently too big, it doesn't charge under 3500 rpm. perfect on the highway but really annoying in town or on small roads. I will soon modify the header to fit a vw golf turbo diesel turbo in there

very nice work, welcome to the board.

Have you put the engine or car on a dyno to evaluate your output?

nope, I haven't had it dynoed as it's not running properly (running too rich on the AFR)

I still have to jet the carburetor correctly, and I'll try a bigger venturi as well.

I'm also thinking about using a modified 34 vw carb, as some people here had really good results with these
