New to ACVW, but not new to VWs. Here's my 73 super

Post by simon_C »

I've had 8 VWs before picking up this super beetle. All of them mk1 or mk2 golfs and jettas.

I'm no stranger to wrenching on cars and whatnot. I'm sick of dealing with Cali SMOG, and i wanted to get away from FWD for a while, so i picked up this 73 super beetle not too long ago.
I've been tuning and fixing and weeding out gremlins in the first couple of weeks of owning it.

it's been repainted, about 10-15 years ago. The paint needs help. It wasn't terribyl well done, but there is almost no rust (little bit of bubbling by the rear vents, as usual)

Engine mount is straight, pea shooters line up with the body. Nobody has been doing hard launches or burnouts in this thing. No creases or bends anywhere. Pan is perfect. Interior is in moderately good shape. front end was rebuilt with poly stuff when it was painted, but it's wearing out now and could use going through. Engine runs alright, need to do a compression check though, and it leaks oil from somewhere. I havent figured out where yet. Stock solex carb is trashed, but it runs okay for now.

for now, it'll probably get a set of dual carbs of some sort, i have an empi GT exhaust to replace the cracked stock box. Rebuilding the shifter some time this week.
Suspension will get the works probably, coilovers up front and drop plates with air shocks out back. Sway bars, Kafer bars, strut brace, the works. It's going to get all of it.
I want to convert it to rack and pinion steering from a late super. The steering box is worn out and probably doesnt have much adjustment range left.

Wider fenders all around will eventually go in it too, I have a set of borbets i want to stuff underneath it. 16x7.5, et36. I wont need to go crazy wide to fit them, maybe an inch extra all around?

I'm also kind of thinking about getting the wider super fender with the early headlight buckets, kinda like this car:

I really love how that thing looks, and I'll be pulling inspiration from it.

Wish me luck guys, this is my first ACVW, though my dad has been working on these for 35 years now.

Neat, but what does that have to do with me?

Yeah its solid. Got it's fair share of gremlins to work out, but overall it's very nice.
