Disappearing engine oil puzzle. I am having this problem for the last 2 years.
Every 10 days without fail I have to top up one quart of engine oil. There are no leaks anywhere, nothing, not a single drop of oil on the floor, clean exhaust pipe, no white smoking exhaust, perfect spark plug tann color, clean dry engine bottom.
Using 5/30wt fully synthetic bardal oil. 0.35 side gap plug, 30kv high voltage coil output.
I suspect that the oil is too thin and got fully burned up in the combustion chamber.
Any suggestions appreciated. TQ

Re: Disappearing engine oil
Hi Sagaboy,
All engines have an "oil consumption" rating, oil consumption meaning not leaked, but consumed going past the piston rings.
It gets burned with the fuel. It sounds like right now you are really within oil consumption spec since you are not seeing oil smoke out the exhaust and you're not leaking.
I don't know if the viscosity of your oil (or it being synthetic) has anything to do with it. At the next oil change, try something different.
Good luck,
FJC

Re: Disappearing engine oil
I have experienced more than a liter of oil being burned per 600 miles without smoking or deposits
Try reving it up And using engine braking to slow down a few times. Sticky rings will do that.
I have managed more than one engine to come back to compression specs with brake fluid soaking through the spark plug holes on a warm engine.

OK, tomorrow, I will change the current 5/30wt oil to 15/50wt and see if oil are being burned-off at a slower rate.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Disappearing engine oil
It's now almost 7 months after I have changed my engine synthetic oil from wt5/30 to Mobil 1 wt5/50 and no longer have the need to top up engine oil. I guess that the previous oil used are too thin and got burned up easily during combustion.

I use 10W40 and alternate non-detergent oil every so often. bugs are strange when it comes to oil. sometimes I think they run better when the oil has the consistency of axle grease.
I put an 8-pass oil cooler on my bug. I have an oil temp gauge but dont know where to install the sensor.
any ideas?

I recently put Rotella T 15/40 in mine (1600 DP)m and boy did it quiet it down. Seems to really like it so far.
