Stock `71 would be a DP1600 w/34PICT-3 (or -4 if it was delivered in CA). It's generally accepted that the best distributor for a stocker is the one used on 1974 4-speed (49-state) Type Is.
Bosch #0 231 170 034, commonly referred to as "the" SVDA. There are other single-vacuum distributors which also have a centrifugal advance mechanism, from AutoStick cars, but they are completely different and not desirable. It can be equipped with an electronic pickup unit if desired, but the stock "points" arrangement serves well if you don't mind a little maintenance now & then. Recently Chinese-made reproductions have entered the marketplace, I'd be wary - a genuine Bosch rebuilt would be your best bet if you can find one.
Electronics' major appeal is low maintenance and perhaps easier starting, but they do have the liability of possibly failing completely with no notice. Not a bad idea to keep the old 009 in your roadbox in the event of such an emergency.

You can also use one of the more-common `71-`73 distributors (the ones with the big bulky dual-diaphragm canister) and run it with the retard side disconnected. Set the initial timing at ~7.5°BTDC (instead of 5°ATDC) and the resultant curve comes pretty close to that of the `74 unit. Uglier, but typically cheap at swap meets
