Steering box for beam front end

Post by bug66 »

Yes, I fully understand that the wear out, and there is no new boxes worth a damn...

So what do you do? TRW sucks, cased closed.

I can't upgrade to a steering rack because of MOT.

Is there really a way to rebuild them?

I've adjusted mine after the book, and it's "fine" but not great..

(Generally speaking for anyone who isn't sure) Adjusting the steering box is problematic as to the condition of the box itself. Both the physical condition and wear have to be taken into consideration; in-other-words is it a good cantidate for rebuilding which most of the books don't talk about; we are now talking about lives here.

Usually the worm and selector gear in the box wear in the straight ahead position, that is where most of the driving occurs; e.g., you saw the steering wheel back and forth to the road irregularities, wind and other things. If you try to re-set in the straight ahead position/feel then you can crack the steering box casting when turnng the steering past the that center position, in other words, the steering gets stiff, binds then can fracture!

I am not sure if you can get the individual components/a kit any more but it wouldn't suprise me if you could. I think it depends on the quanity being bought is enough (the requilders have to have a source but is it available to everyone?) and the legal/insurance considerations play a part in it. Some of the manuals will tell you how to do it but you have to be very careful when inspecting the box: are bushings to be pressed in then reamed (some types of boxed do) if necessary others use roller bearing (I don't remember what VW does.

Many years ago I looked into it hard but was talked out of it for the reasons and resposibilites I have given. Myself... I wouldn't want to take the responsibilty for the rebuild especially if anyone got hurt. If I remember correctly there is some legal mumbo-jumbo that come with a steering box when you buy a new one.

The TRX boxes (Brazil) I agree aren't the best but so far they seem to be the best I have found so far (no pun intended). I don't know of anyone else that makes them to be honest.
