As my introduction said, I managed to find an AN-engine, which is correct engine for a '74 euro model 412: 1800cc 85hp, (in this case) equipped for automatic gearbox.
This engine has been sitting a very long time (fortunately oil in it) and it looks quite horrible on the outside.
So far I've removed carburetors and disassembled the other one and all the nuts and bolt open just like that, easily. Also all the screw slots look totally unused, so I'm most probably the first person opening them after factory. I'm trying to keep them that way.
But the point of the post was to present some of the pictures I took and the starting point. Hopefully some progress during the winter.

Also found (probably a familiar site for other users) a site selling carburetor repair sets for 40 PDSIT: http://www.ruddies-berlin.de/40PDSIT_VW.htm (For me Germany is near and postage from there low, compared to US.)

Re: AN engine rebuild
Not much progress in winter as I didn't find a garage for the job, but now it's summer again and we can do stuff outside (actually in trunk, as you can see), nice. Currently +12C (53F), that's not much, but we had two weeks about +23C (73F), that was nice.
Disassembly has progressed almost to the block, one piston is stuck and one bolt didn't want to open, but nothing major so far. Everything is just rusty and dusty.

Re: AN engine rebuild
Took the engine tin to sandblasting and painting and those are very pretty now:

Otherwise not much progress as 93mm domed pistons seems to be N/A.
Thinking about 96mm flathead pistons (and cylinders of course) but still searching.

Re: AN engine rebuild
Private message sent .. I'm interested as I'd really like to build original engine (instead of low compression 2-liter or something between).
