STF GTG-Elko to Bodie Adventure October 6-10 2016

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

STF GTG-Elko to Bodie Adventure October 6-10 2016

Post by no1clyde »

This year is my turn so to speak, I went on Tim's and Richard's adventures and had a blast. I did not make Larry's but I didn't have a car ready then. So now I will continue in the long trip type adventure style, this trip will be from Elko Nv. to Bodie Ca. and back, two different ways with lots to see I hope (well I know as I have been to 2/3s of these places). It is looking like 850 miles or so, the route has been worked out. At the EIA we were talking about other adventures and Tako had been to Bodie not to long before that trip and it was brought up. Well I thought I could get us there and back from my house and did think about it some. Richard was wanting to do the GCA so he was first but I kept this trip in mind. After we got back from the GCA I went to work on this idea and like what came out. I have ran the route by Tim and Richard and both likes what I came up with so it is a go. This will show a part of Nevada that is over looked kind of, central Nevada does not get the respect from a lot of off road people like the deserts do. We will be seeing active mines, ghost mines, ghost towns both living and dead, deserts, mountains and some odd things.

For anyone that is interested it will probably in September but can change some but that is my plan. We will leave Elko and go towards Crescent Valley then south down Grass Valley to Austin and get gas, from there to around Ione for the first night. Day 2 we look around Ione and Berlin and then to a old mining area called Rawhide then on to Yerington (the largest town we will see) for gas and food and then go to Pine Grove, a ghost town of sorts for night 2. After that we go to Bodie and spend part of the day there and then back to Fletcher Springs for night 3. From there to Hawthorne for gas and a back road to Mina and then to Carvers for gas and some pavement to Manhattan, Belmont and on to Pine Creek for night 4, From there to Eureka for gas and then back to Elko. That is the plan and this summer I will per run a 200 mile radius around Elko and some around Yerington on a dirt bike ride.

Now that it is 2016 I thought I would throw this out here.

Having seen the route I can say it is awesome! A lot of "roads" like the GCA, so travel should be fairly quick. Also a lot to see. Looking forward to the trip.

Sidenote: Leader should have a strong radio. When I was riding with Ed and we were leading we had a handheld which we "outran" when trying to relay information to those behind us.

I can't wait. I don't know how much of the trip I will be able to make due to limited time off this year, but I will definitely be there.

My handheld with an external antenna was still not near as good as a high power radio, but it had greatly improved reception over the stock antenna.

The GCA (North rim of the Grand Canyon) was a bucket list item for me and I'm glad to check that off my list.
The trips are really fun and a great group of guys to travel with. I'm looking forward to Ed's trip.

What skill level would you rate this route? Beg,nov, exper? And what level of car would this require? Basic Baja bug, or high speed, long travel king of car? I just might have to get off my fat ass and start working on my Baja bug project! lol

The way these routes have been, a novice driver in a basic baja bug can have lots of fun.

Well if you read the GCA thread you will see we had a basic Baja Bug with us and it did just fine and it will on this trip too. This trip will be like the GCA, dirt roads and primitive camping but going thru towns for gas and ice. You will need to be able to drive around 200 miles a day and then camp in the middle of no where. As far speed goes on the better roads we will average around 60 mph, covering ground so we will have time to check out some of the places we will visit. A good working suspension is a plus but long travel is not needed.

As Tako just said, you will have a lot of fun. The way we work these is the faster people usually go first and but we do wait at turn offs and stops.
