I have a 1973 super beetle, we used the emergency flashers now the turn signals or the emergency flashers work. I was going to replace the switch and the flasher but im having trouble finding the stock switch. i also saw a post on line were a guy replaced them both and they still wont work. I hear this is a comon problem withe the 73 S/B? Any sugestions would be helpfull. Thank you

Was that supposed to read "now neither the turn signals or the emergency flashers work"?

Have you checked both fuses? The hazard switch does two things - it bridges the RH & LH side together and it selects the power source to the flasher. The source for t'signal power is fuse #12 which is only hot with the ignition on; hazard power originates at fuse #8 which is hot all the time.

It's unlikely that both the switch & the flasher went bad simultaneously...I suspect that if either is the problem it's the hazard switch - the power-selection portion of the switch has failed open or it developed a short (even a momentary one) which popped both fuses. If you find the fuses blown, replace them, and everything works again the switch would remain on my suspect list until I found some other problem.

At least as likely is that there's a short (again, perhaps an intermittent one) downstream of the t'signal switch somewhere. If any of the turn signal lamps, or the wiring to them, is shorted to ground that could blow fuse 12 when that side is selected with the t'signal switch as well as fuse 8 when the hazards are switched on. You may go through a few fuses isolating the problem if it's this....sometimes the quickest approach is to remove all of the t'signal bulbs to see if the fuses remain intact, then put them back in one at a time until you blow a fuse when energized. As a rule bulbs don't short internally, but if there's a problem with one of the bulb holders this should uncover it.

P/N 133 953 235 is no longer available new (unless you happen across an N.O.S. one collecting dust somewhere)
The same switch was used on Porsche 944; they superseded it with 477 953 235A - I would think that the 477 part would also fit `73-`79 Super Beetles.
