Need the camping 411
Were planning on being down in SoCal for the Christmas Holiday. Pretty sure we will be in Glamis from the 26-30th. But looking for some camping info in the Ocotillo Wells area or maybe down south in Ocotillo/Plaster City area. Because we may or may not have anybody with us that has any experience with either of these areas, I am looking for input on good places to set up camp. I have never been to either of these areas at all. Dry camping is fine or hookups either way. Must be in the midst of it all though. As we will have a couple quads, my Jeep and the baja. Not looking to do 100 mile loops.
Any suggestions for a rookie?

The Plaster City/Superstition area is all open camping (no hook-ups). Essentially find a place to pull off and set up your camp. Plaster City is divided into East and West with the US Gypsum plant separating them along Evan Hewes highway. People also like to camp in the Superstition area as well. Take the Dunaway Road exit off the I-8 and head north to Evan Hewes Highway. If you turn left on Evan Hewes you will be right at Plaster City East. A right turn on Evan Hewes from Dunaway Rd and driving a couple of miles and then make a left on Huff Rd to Wheeler Rd. (turn left) will take you into the Superstition area. There is plenty of space on both sides of Wheeler Rd. for camping, in fact the south side of the road is a former dry lake. Plenty of trails in the area and you can drive overland between Plaster City and Superstition with no trouble. You can even make it overland to Ocotillo Wells.

If you want to stay at Ocotillo, there is a ton of space to dry camp. Along Main St. or County Line there are bathrooms (toilets only) if you don't want to fill your black tank. You can dump at Desert Ironwoods or Blu-Inn before heading home too. But for the most part, just look for a nice flat spot off one of the graded roads and park your rig. There are a lot of established fire pits to circle around, just make sure not to drive through one while circling another...
Full hookups are available at MobiLand, Blu-In, and Desert Ironwoods. All of which have pretty reasonable rates from what I understand (no RV for me). They are all located just across the highway from the OHV park. I've stayed at MobiLand and Desert Ironwoods and both are decent places.

Are there any fees for dry camping in these areas? Like Glamis and Dumont have passes and/or fee stations.

Probably headed to Ocotillo Wells as our first stop. I know the Casino at the Salton Sea for fuel but what is close if anything for fuel in Ocotillo Wells?

ocotillo wells get really dusty and its quite busy. I dont know of any other places around ocotillo wells but pole line rd goes straight to salton sea. There is a Chevron in ocotillo but thats across the desert form ocotillo wells.CentralWAbaja wrote:Probably headed to Ocotillo Wells as our first stop. If your're street legal, you can head to Anza Borrego for fuel, or you can get gas at the Blu-Inn (for a pretty penny). You can make it to the Arco off of the 86 in the dirt and stay in the park.CentralWAbaja wrote:Probably headed to Ocotillo Wells as our first stop. Re: Need the camping 411
From Ocotillo Wells, according to Google Maps, it is approximately 13 miles (as the crow flies) across the desert to the AM/PM at the corner of S. Marina Dr. (Borrego Salton Sea Way) in Salton City as opposed to the nearly 30 miles by taking the highway. If you end up in in the Plaster City area there is a gas station in Ocotillo (approx. 10 miles west on Evan Hewes highway) and one in Seeley (approx. 10 miles east on Evan Hewes).

Nearly a straigt shot if you take pole line it ends right at borrego salton sea way. Then a couple of blocks on a dirt trail that runs along side the road.chuckput wrote:From Ocotillo Wells, according to Google Maps, it is approximately 13 miles (as the crow flies) across the desert to the AM/PM at the corner of S.
