turbo parts hunt

Post by codyyarbrough »

Im about to start converting my 1600 motor to draw through turbo. So im trying to make a list of what i need to get it running and driveable.
The motor is in a buggy so its more of a play toy than a daily driver but anyways.
So far i have
turbo
stage one pressure plate
new clutch

Soon to order
turbo header from lowbudget vw or one like it if i can find a cheaper one
holly red fuel pump

not sure on
which electronics i need. im thinking wideband sensor is a must.
holly 4 bbl or the 2 bbl side draw setup is one way better than the other or is it just preference.

I know i missing some stuff but im looking for a basic bare bone turbo build. Any suggestions or tricks would be awesome.

Wideband for sure. I really like my PLX wideband.
As for carb, there are lots running both, so to me it's preference. I like Holley because I can get parts anywhere. With my Holley I have had no trouble running it with the stock fuel pump. Holley also has a way bigger fuel bowl so your less likely to starve it for fuel. thanks
I was advised by everyone to put HD single valve springs in it too.

Are you going to buy the intake from someone too? If not you have to make all that
You have a buggy so there is tons of space. I'd look at Clonebug build. There are way cheaper ways to use a regular header.

Think about ignition control!

Yeah this can be as easy/expensive or hard/cheap as you want. You can limit your timing to 24° for free and it will work "ok" especially if you don't boost too much. Or you can spend a bunch more on some better control, which will work way better and allow you to dial it in.
To keep it cheap and simple you can throw a turbo and carb on it, limit the timing, push 8-10 psi through it and have a little joy. Mo joy=mo money. All depends on what you want.

If you decide to use a Holley hit me up. I have a bunch. I have 1 more that isn't in the pic. 5 of the 390cfm 4 barrels, 2 of the 500cfm 2 barrels, and 2 of the 350cfm 2 barrels.

yea ill take a good look at clonebug when i get back in later for more ideas, an ignition system will come into play, i always liked the idea of the holly 4 bbl for like you said parts are everywhere. Im trying to go with the slow growing snowball effect on this because i know i will want more boost ones i get a taste for it. but in the meantime ill keep reading all these post and gather info.

Hello,
Welcome to the STF, I hope you realize how addictive boost can be(worse than crack). You would be doing yourself a huge favor to take a very serious look at EFI, it can be done fairly cheap if you have some fab skills and are willing to learn. Where are you located? There is a good chance that someone lives fairly close to you that also shares your passion.
Good Luck

Have you considered using a SU for a draw through?

Welkome, I run both a 4 barrel Holley on a 2276 and a 40 Doce sidedraft on a 1915
Holley is the way to go , cruise's better starts up easy too, no need for boost reference regulator
sidedraft not so,, does work after many hours & mods  but they are sexy as heck  if u going with a doce I'll try and help
what size is your motor ?

How do you get anything over the size of a bugspray to meter fuel which is a 200 CFM correct? :?

Just have to jet accordingly.
When I first built mine I had a 450cfm mechanical secondaries carb on it. I figured it was way too big so I disconnected the secondary side and used a spring to hold it shut. Didn't work! I figured it would be half of a 450 that way. Nope. Just dialed in the jetting and it worked well.
Plus a 200cfm carb wouldn't support much power anyway. 140hp or so maybe?

:? I can see how it can be done with a blow through with a non open plenum but that's it. I just thought maybe a technical answer might come a long. Jetting does not get around the issue of having a barrel that is too big and the advocates for running a huge CFM carb don't offer the answer. Emulsion tubes don't address the problem either.
