Turbo problem

Post by Amurray »

Well I drop my engine today to inspect my turbo due to the sound it was making. Wasn't sure what the heck happened...well now I know the blades rubbed the housing on both sides...a 600hp capable turbo is now crap. Damn Damn Damn DAMN. That really hurts.......... HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ME :( .... Anyone want a used door stop😞.
Oh well poop happens....this is just forcing me to buy a new GTX35R turbo capable of 750HP.

Don't know how to break this to the wife but hey my birthday is in a few days maybe just maybe I can talk her into it getting it :D

Nope....I rapped the exhaust and changed to Brad Penn 20-50 oil. The green oil. It was fine before that. Well I took the Brand Penn out of the engine. I spoke to a few VW people that advised against using that oil in an turbo air cooled VW. I have 6.5 quarts left that I will NEVER use.

Weird. I wouldn't think that oil would cause your bearings to take a crap. Even if it's not good for aircooled vw, it's surely fine for a turbo.
Is there any weird side load on your turbo causing stress on anything?

I've been using Brad Penn Green for 4-5 years and all the miles on my Turbo engine have had this oil in it.
I've used 10-30, 10-40, 15-40 and 20-50. No issues with my turbo.

Then I really do not know how it happened. I made two changes to my car and it's been working well up untill that point oh well like I said πŸ’© happensπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ. I known wrapping the exhaust didn't do it.

I know but theres not much to the turbo. It gets oil and worked fine up untill this point. Boost comes on quick. It still makes boost even in this state but the shaft is definitely moving to hit the housing but none of the blades are broken. The last drive I hit 15psi and all hell broke loose but when l got home I noticed the sound. The temps exiting the turbo are hotter by about 30Β°. The temp are usually around 124Β° exiting the turbo. The intercooler brings it down to around 88Β° and lower if I'm driving. I took the Brad Penn out and it sounded a little better but the damage is done. I'm sending it out for inspection.

Been out of the game for a bit. Is Brad Penn still the go-to? I have enough for one more change. I'm not even sure if they sell it anymore, unless it's changed names.

Brad Penn is the oil of choice in aircooled VW engines especially racing/ hard use applications, have seen much longer bearing life and cam wear issues have vanished also. One thing that I have learned from the diesel guys is to always let a turbo engine idle for several minutes prior to shutdown so EGT's reach a low enough temp that the turbo gets proper lube. My Dodge Cummins never get shut off before the EGT is below 300F. Hope you get your problem figured out.
Good quality is getting harder and harder to find.

The reason for idling down a turbo engine is that they can spin up to 45000rpm and they can have some inertia that takes a while to slow down. If you shut your engine down straight away with the turbo still spinning at those speeds it's not getting any oil supply and can lead to early bearing failure.
