Cylinder Base Gaskets

Finally after not being able to work on the converted Type 4 engine for many months I have parts for reassembly and hope to get the Ghia back on the road. Do I have to use a cylinder base gasket? The old cylinders did have what seems to be a shim and not a gasket. I will not be using a top gasket.

As noted...no...you do not need a base gasket but you will have to seal this area to not have oil leaks. To remove the top head gasket you need to lap the cylinders lightly on glass...then lap them lightly to each head opening. Ray
