Why do my wipers only have one speed- slow?

On my beetle I had some intermittent wiper action on the 2nd speed setting (fast). I cleaned the electrical contacts of the wiper stalk switch with electrical contact cleaner. Its working now every time.... no fiddling to get it working.
There might be over possible causes as well. Maybe start your fault finding looking at the easy and cheap fixes first...i.e. loose wire, dirty contacts etc.
