Chenowth

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Post by DennisParrish »

I
20190716_183412.jpg
just picked up a Chenowth chassis and don't know anything about it, has a plate with model # V2RL1K looks like and a serial #1292 the guy that I got it from said that he stretched it 18" with chrome molly tubing, I was just wondering if anyone could give me a little more information, like I said it is just a tube chassis set up for a beam front end and a swing arm transaxle, I am planning on putting a new 1904 stroker motor in it from GEX international, any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, thanx any help please I don't have a clue what I have

Can you post some pix please. Also do some clanging around the extensions to see if it was done right.

Not disputing the quality but just advising double checking; not all modifications to existing rails are the same so it is best to double check. I got caught in poor upgrades in my first glass buggy and it took three complete tear downs just to solve some of the problem. A couple of others in the group got some less than ideal mods to their rails also. We often see used rails come back in broken as they are beat up the first time out on the sand... in-experienced drivers beating up over used/unkept rails.

What are the plans for it? Street, off-road, sand or just what. I'm not sure but with the cross-piece in the pass compartment it looks like it could be setup to be a four seater (the long wheel base also could derive that).

Check the distance between the center of the mount for the tube beam. King and link beams have a different tube spread than a Ball-joint beam. I'm guessing that it is for a K&L beam with pads above it for bolt on shock towers.

If you were to convert to IRS you'd need to move the battery mount bracket to add the trailing arm pivots. Don't seen any shock towers/mounting points.

Are those slots in the rear tube behind the engine? Kind of look like places for the tail/stoplights to be located. Again, how is it going to be used.

Not sure how the rear engine cage is connected to the transaxle mounts but what I see so far looks to be better then usual for a used rail.

Over all it looks to be a pretty good starting place for any of several uses.

My opinion. Lee

It's mostly be a street toy and the cutouts are for the rear lights, and yes I did have a problem with the GEX motor but they got it right in a quick timely manner with no additional cost to me for anything and haven't had anymore issues, he stretched it to make it a 4seater, it has a ball joint beam and a drop axle trans, I just picked it up Saturday at a
really good deal, at least I think so, also have a fresh Benco Freeway Flyer Transaxle in it, both have about 4k miles on them since installing in my 2seater rail, thanx for your input, very few rails around this part of Va. Haven't really messed with them since the 70's, had a few VW's back in the day

Out here rails are not allowed on the street anymore or weren't as of the last time I checked. Too many negatives especially with the rain and foggy conditions where they can disappear (also guys were stupid and ruined it for everyone else) from view; especially from the truckers who look down on everything (play on words intended).

I'm surprised about the BJ beam on a rail but for the street I am sure it will do it's job well and w/o complaints. When/if you go off-road then things can change a lot depending...

Not sure what a "dropped axle trans" is but keep the bottom tubes of the rail high enough to miss the big turtles on the road, not the small ones used for lane dividers. Also prepare for the tall driveway bumps and humps but then since you have another rail you probably know about this   .
