I just found a 1973 thing 35000 miles..in a garage for 16 years..bought it,, bought new tires,new battery,cleaned the carb,filled it with aviation fuel..let it sit 48 hours..turned the key ..it fired up, ran rough as hell for couple of days now runs great.smooth. the only thing I noticed is it runs a little hot in my view..should that be expected? For safety reasons I replaced brake cylinders, the master as well and brake lines.my big question..is there anything I should watch out for in the next couple of weeks before it hibernates for the winter.

What makes you think it's running hot? Is there a temp gauge?

I suspect that the Thing's body was never designed to run at speed on modern roads and the '73 just runs hot. When I had the stock setup and a Gene Berg temp stick, I found that I couldn't run for too long on the freeway before it got too hot. I also found that if I wedged open the deck lid by about an inch, I could run on the freeway much much longer before it was too hot. I had louvers cut into the deck-lid behind the license plate and it had the same effect.
