CB Hideaway and Junkyard Turbo

Hello I have a 1968cc, CW with a 110 cam. I am planning on buying a Cb Hideaway header and want to use a junkyard turbo. I know i will most likely need an adapter for a turbo but I just want to know what my best options are for a motor of this size. Id prefer lower boost of around 8lbs and keep it under 5500-6000rpm. The car will be used for autocross alot so faster spooling would be nice. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Subaru WRX turbos seem to be the big ticket these days. Fast spool even on 1600s. I'm sure one of the half dozen or so guys running them will be responding right behind me.

I have a Subaru tdo4 on a 1600. See boost initially at 2400 all in around 3500 pushing upwards of 20lbs.

An awesome turbo can’t recommend it enough.

Awesome but will these be too sall for a 1968cc? meaning will it tend to spool and boost going up an incline? I also see that there are many different types of Td04's, which is the one I should be looking for?

I also have one on a stock 1600. Also see boost at around 2400 rpm. If you want fast spool, that would certainly do it. For on the street, I think it's too small. If I'm cruising at 50-55 mph (in flat land Florida) and give even the slightest hint of acceleration, it's making boost quick.
I wonder if a TD05-16G would work in the same way on your larger engine. The WRX guys are seeing 15+ psi at 3500 rpm on a 2.0L with them. Finding one could be the problem though. They say the ones to have are off of the Evo3 (big 16g whatever that is). Hell maybe even one of the HX 35 Holsets would do the trick. Seems to be more of them out there.
Hard to give you much of a recommendations without knowing the rest of your set up though.
And if you really really wanted to know, you could research it and learn to read a compressor map, then you could pick the perfect turbo for what your doing. That is voodoo to me unfortunately so I'm no help there!

Well I am trying to go for a vintage feel so it’s going to be blowing through a Holley bug spray carb. It’s got big valves on the head with a light port and polish. I’m running pertronix ignition and it’s 8.0:1 compression. Not sure what more info I can give.

OK well maybe the TD04-13T would be ok, but probably still a bit small. At 8 psi of boost you would be looking at around160hp. An intercooler would do you lots of good. Might start trying to figure out where you could jamb one of those!

So if the TD04-13T might still be a bit small would my next option be the Evo turbo you had previously mentioned? And yeah I have though about intercoolers and how I could mount one.

The WRX turbo is capable of supporting 270 hp. If your goals are above that then you need a turbo that will support it.
Any hp goals at or below the 270 hp will suit the WRX turbo perfectly.
It came stock on a 2.0L opposed 4 cylinder so I don't see why it won't be perfect for your 1.9L engine.

You should be able to find them in the $40-$100 range. It's cheap enough to give it a try.

The only problem I see is being able to clock it correctly for the CB header. The stock wastegate works really well and having to shell out 100 bucks more for an external wasetegate is just an extra cost you don't need to waste money on.
Build a cheap MBC out of a 1/4 inch brass Tee and go for it. The stock wastegate spring is set at 6.0 lbs. It is prefect for getting a taste of turbo goodness without blowing your engine to kingdom come.

And the plan so far is that I actually have a Naca duct feeding cold air into the intake so that should help our quite a bit. And that kind of power would be plenty for me in a bug. Can still use it to blow some unsuspecting doors off. Haha.
I really am just worried of it boosting constantly.

Maybe something about .60 AR? Some of the eBay T3/t4 combos should spec out around there.

Or try a hx35. Though my 1600 wouldn’t spin that thing at All

I’m worried about having an eBay China turbo blowing up on me and that’s why I want a cheap OEM one even if I need to rebuild it.

And I already have an external gate that a purchased so I planned on welding the internal one shut which should help with clocking it properly.

Keep in mind that a CB HIdeaway is flanged for a T3(?) and the suby turbo has a specific flange, so youll have you get creative at the collector. I vote t3/t4, madmike has had good luck with a chinese turbo. I think you can even get them internally gated
