Which mhi turbo for 2109

Post by Wentzel »

Hi, I am building a 2109 and need some advice on which turbo, preferably mhi since I can get them easy at a good price.

The engine is as follows :

CB044 early wedgeports,
42 inlet and 38 exhaust valves,
76 x 94 using wbx casing,
Tb is vw mp9 I think around 55mm,
Engle w120 cam,
Local efi with Siemens deka 875cc injectors,
Charge cooler with water tank etc

Spoke to a local guy that reccomended a turbo from a volvo s70 (tdo4hl?) with 20g billet compressor. The car has never been to the track but may go now and then. It is mostly street driven so I would like to have a decent mid range.

Was hoping for 200kw or a bit more of that is realistic.

Thanks

MHI is Mitsubishi Heavy Industies....
The TD04hl would probably work but they do have an integrated BOV and do not reclock very well.
The WRX turbo would work for your hp range and if more is needed the STI turbo will get you to 350 hp.

Seems like I remember reading the 20g is what a lot of the sti and maybe evo guys upgrade to and run in the 350-375hp range. But that's just going off memory. I could be wrong.

The W120 is in the engine but I am still finalizing the intake and cooling before installing it in the car.

If the Subaru turbo can handle the 2109 I could just upgrade the compressor? My concern was that the turbine will not flow enough and choke the engine, or that the 20 wheel would be slow to spool and be lazy in mid range.

Any other compressor or combo that could work on these turbos?

I have the tdo4l in the car on a 1776 currently but could upgrade when I install the 2109. I am using an external wastegate and closed/removed the internal one.

Only thing I have seen is upgrade the TD04L to a 19t, but I think every time I look it says they are on backorder, and have been for a long time. Maybe a 16G would be better for you? I don't know much about them, but I see there is a 16G and a 16G big (whatever that means).

Will have a look at the compressor maps fpr the 16 wheels.

Clone will the td04l support 350hp?
Stock or with what upgrades will that be possible? The one I have is off an older sti.

The TD04L-13T will support 270 hp in stock form and about 330 if you get the new compressor wheel and housing.
The IHI turbo from the the stock STI will support 350 cr hp. It is not a MHI turbo although the flanges are all the same.
They look the same but might be slightly different as in the bolt pattern being a little larger. Flanges are available or quite easy to make.

Clone have you seen the upgrade kit somewhere besides this place? It's said "backorder" for a year or 2.

Thanks I didn't think it could support that much.

Searching the web I get mixed answers. I was thinking to start with the turbo and upgrade the compressor to a 16, 19 or maybe even 20 and then if needed upgrade the turbine too. 350 hp would be great if my setup will support it.

Those figures are fw hp right?

Here are some MHI numbers. https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showth ... did=278517
And then you can use the calculator Clone found to plug your numbers into to see how much cfm you need. Then just match the turbo cfm output to the cfm requirements.

Are you planning on running any water/meth injection or is E85 available to you there?

We don't have E85 available, best I can get is 95 octane of not so great quality. Water/meth injection will probably installed once the engine is running and tuned.
