Manx intercooler options
Hey Guys, so im just about done collecting parts for my Turbo Manx type4 build, But im undecided about the best way to cool the charge Air. I would like to go down the water to air road but I have never done a w2a system before. I will be running a "custom" fan shroud so i have space for the intercooler core but im undecided about where to mount the radiator(s). Ideally i would like to keep everything within the body, so I would like to mount the rad up the front behind the number plate cut out and mount a tank further up near the fuel tank. But this will mean that i can only have a small rad and tank.
So after all of that, has anyone done a water to air on a manx? Am i being to ambitious with the small amount of space I have?
Can i effectively run 2 small radiators, say 1 at the front and 1 near the gear box?
Some other info abou the engine:
Street manx
2.4 type 4
Target 20 psi of boost for short runs up mountain roads
EFI running E85 and water injection
Thanks

Running both E85 and meth injection I don't think you're going to have an issue with temps

I agree. With my little 4"x6" barrel cooler, tiny heat exchanger with a 7" fan under the car tucked up there tight, and E85 I see temps around 105-120. That is at an average 25 psi of boost and 95 degree ambient temps.
Other guys here are saying they are seeing ambient temps or less with meth injection.
That said.... That big ass engine and 20 psi of boost.... It's gunna be scary!

I think you will see benefit in using even only a small radiator at the front of your car.
I relocated mine to the front of my bug and switched to a larger radiator, but having had a conversation with a guy at a car show about rad size and placement, I think placement is more important.
A larger rad in an area of poor air flow will still get hot. It will just take longer to get hot..... and once it’s hot, it won’t cool down due to the lack of air cooling it.
A smaller rad positioned in a high air flow location would be more effective. Even though the surface area of coolant being exposed to the cooling air is smaller, the fact that it’s being exposed to the cooling air will always make it a more effective system.
Hope that makes sense....?
I haven’t monitored my charge temps since switching to a front mounted, larger radiator, but I don’t need a gauge to tell me that when I can now place my hand on my chargecooler and it still feels cold to the touch.

Re: Manx intercooler options
Not a W2A cooler but verry effective on my setup.

I tought about mounting it under the side in front of the rear wheels but with A2A it was too much pluming.
Look for a barrel cooler in your motor compartiment and maybe 2 heat exchangers on the side.
I didnt wat to cut or drill holes in my manx but if you do, why not in the luggage area ?

Better to be blown than to suck!

Re: Manx intercooler options
I doubt my little intercooler would keep up with a 2.4L engine. Mine is only one half from a 3.0L V6 twin turbo twin intercooler engine.
I gain most of my cooling from my W/I.
Here is a pic when I first installed it...no fan on it yet. It is 8" x 7" x 3.5" with 2 inch inlet and outlet.

W/I gives me 100 degrees of charge cooling and the intercooler gives me about 30-40 degrees. It all depends on the ambient temps though.
I have seen boosted IAT's of 67 degrees at about 24 lbs boost....that is in December when outside temps are probably around 40 degrees.
Late fall, winter and early spring are the best times for my heavy boost runs.

Re: Manx intercooler options
Thanks for the response guys!
66Brm yes thats the idea. Im in Australia so ill take all the cooling i can get.
BUGUY awesome thats about the size im looking at and that cooling it better than what i had imagined it would be. Do you run a tank, if so what size? Oh yeah its going to be an experience to finally drive, i have widerned my guards to fit 295 semi slicks so it should launch well.
DAN yeah that was my reasoning also, im just concerned that a smaller rad (without a fan) will heat soak quicker if im only doing short 1st and 2nd pulls and not getting heaps of speed. I think im leaning towards running a small rad up front and a smaller rad (say from a motobike) that the water directly from the outlet of the core can go into next to the trans just to try and get rid of some heat before the lines enters the tunnel.
RUBEN and Clone thats a great set up! I live in Australia and unfortunately they are very strict about everything being "within the vehicle"
. A few guys have done it over here but we basically have to put a whale tail around it to make it compliant.

Re: Manx intercooler options
That s*cks....
Then a barrel cooler and radiator w. fan is the only option.
Plus W/M injection.
Should keep it cool!
Show us some pics, and keep us updated!

Yeah I really does.
Will do! I will probably have most of t4 build over on the type 4rum as im doing a few interesting things with the internals of this motor, but i will definitely post photos here once its boosting

Yes I run a tank that is about 3.5 gallons in size. If I do several boost runs in a row I've seen it get up to around 160 degrees before. It cools back down pretty quickly though. The bigger the better.
