I now own a 69 Beetle. What oil should I run in the engine?

hot weather:

Valvoline VR1 Racing SAE 20W-50 Motor Oil 1 QT, Case of 6

cold weather:
Valvoline VR1 Racing SAE 10W-30 Motor Oil 1 QT, Case of 6

Valvoline VR1 has plenty of zinc for the flat tappet Type 1's.

The stock type 1 engine usually has a capacity of 2.5 quarts.

Your engine was designed to use straight 30 weight oil. But oils have improved since then, so better is to use 10W-30 so that the oil flows better when you start it cold. Better still would be 5W-30 since it's the same price. I would prefer to use 0w-30, but it is too hard to find.

Using tar like that makes the engine oil temp hotter than if you used thinner oil.

IMO stock engines don't need to worry about oil's zinc content. There's not enough spring pressure to hurt anything.
