65 deck lid spring

so forgive me if there is a deck lid spring thread here already.

I ha e an original 65 and the spring was hitting the air cleaner when trying to open. After searching some pictures it seemed the spring was upside down. So I took off lid and removed spring.

Here is the problem, to put it in the "right" way it doesn't fit?? I tried using the low and high hanger point on both the lid and the car?

To me it seems like the long loop on the spring is to long??? Are there two differnt sizes? Any help would be great, thanks!

Yes I have seen a different one without it but that is on later models....trying to keep stock and original if I can. Thinking maybe carb might be to high?

My 66 and my wifes 62 both have the single piece spring and your carb is definitely not to high
