Planning my new engine

Post by villemil »

So I want to go faster. Just got my 1641cc draw through turbo engine finished but you know how it goes. Once you start making some power you always want more :D

This time I would like to go with turbo EFI, maybe megasquirt? I believe that is the best "cheap" way to start with. It has to be fully streetable.
I don't want to spend a fortune so I'm looking for the best money/power ratio I can get without cheaping out too much. Is the best way to go with over like 82mm stroke and 92 or 94mm bore? What about heads? 044 wedge port?
Will VW AS case be enough to handle these? Looking for around 250hp.
Any recommendations and tips are very welcome!
Also here is a pic of the victim, poor bug has to suffer for my bad decisions for not keeping it stock haha

Hey Ville, I have build a few 'strokers' may I suggest a 78mm stroke with good H-beam rods by 92 thick wall cylinders any big valved head I use 42x37.5's with a fk10 cam you will like this combo and make your 250+hp easy  the rest of the guys on here run FI so they can help?

Hmm sounds good. Do you have experience of different cranks? A shop in Finland where I live sells AA and EMPI 4340 chromoly cranks for 369€. I think its pretty cheap for a forged aftermarket crank. But how is the quality?

And what is the difference between 82x92 setup and 78x92 that you suggested exept with 82 stroke you get more cc's?

Edit.

Or lets say 78x92 vs 80x94? Pros and cons?

I have no first hand experience but AA pistons have been used for a long time and I assume there cranks are also used.

Wedge ports maybe to wild for a street engine you may considered the mini wedges.

As for EFI I would look for an ms2 or micro squirt unless your looking for more options or want to grow the system and capabilities then look at MS3 pro.

Bore size I would say it’s all just a few cc difference. A 92 works as well as a 94 just a matter of choice the machine work is the same.

The AS case should hold 250 guys have been making big power on them for a long time m. Though if / when I build one I like the idea of a new case pre clearanced.

For ECU, I’ll be using Speeduino.
Worth considering and works with Tuner Studio.

I would go with a 78 X 92 mm thick wall , 78mm because of good crank web overlap= strength, also ease of build with b pistons. Thick wall cylinders for their rigidity and strength. Match with an fk8/ eagle 2288 and cb panchito heads with CNC chambers, 1.4 rockers.

You might give some serious thought to going efi on the engine you have first. Building an engine and going to efi at the same time would be a big job. You already know your engine runs well, so you won't have to stress about that at the same time as learning efi.
Plus with water/meth injection, you can run quite a bit of boost. Big boost on a 1641 is no joke. Mine stock engine with big boost was fast as hell. Then once your bored with that you could build a big engine.

Plan is to build this new engine and at the same time I can enjoy my current one. I got some experience on EFI so that won't be a biggie for me. Also thanks Bruce, I'll look into Speeduino. Where I live people sell used MS ECUs pretty cheap, even MS3 Pro's.

My current build does not work even near perfectly on street but it is fun to race from lights :D So if wedge ported 044 will give me more power I'll definetly take that route! I'm all about the power, not so much about it working perfectly on the streets haha

unless you have a good old Scat crank or a Berg 82mm, stick to the 78mm size , can you fine a shop that can balance it , flywheel and Pressure all separate? have good oil control and your all set,, I still use stock case's, some 'sweat' more than others
66brm 's combo is sweet too if your limited on the heads

Pat Downs at CB recommended wedge ports to me for a 2276 build. Says they are his favorite. Pretty hard to beat the Panchitos for the price though.

You should be able to reach 250HP with a 1915 and some decent heads, do you currently have any extra parts? Hard to beat the quality of a German crankshaft. You shouldn't need anything fancy to reach your power goal, forged pistons and ARP rod bolts would be recommended.
Good Luck

True what woodbuggy1 said, but I have both a 1915 turbo and a 2276 ,, both run great but a 'stroker' has more Balls ,,just no comparison really:lol:

So let's say if I wanna go EFI with my current engine what do I need if I buy Speeduino. Like I know I need intake manifold for injectors and I need all the fuel stuff but what else?
I was looking into stock-like intake manifolds with injectors slots and then just use a single throttlebody with my current intake system (it's the one on the picture) I wanna change as little as possible on my current build.

High pressure pump & regulator with hose up to that spec.
CB injection end castings / injectors / fuel rails. (Or DIY modified stock / full custom).
Pump relay plus wiring.
Crank position : trigger wheel / hall sensor although you could use the distributor (locked) to get a 4 point trigger initially. 12+ points is better tho & oem is typically 36 tooth.
Ignition coil pack: VW”106” for example. Perhaps you could use the distributer/coil but not 100% certain how well that works.

Air temp sensor / map vacuum hose to ECU / engine temp sensor
