Breather pipe?

Post by advinnie »

Hi all I’ve got myself a 1971 1641cc beetle and I have a question for you lot.
There is a pipe that hangs down below the engine near cylinder two that connects to the oil filter, now when the engine is running there are pulses of hot air coming out of this pipe is this normal or does this mean I have blow by?
Also there is no crank case breather fitted at the moment I’m waiting for my hose to turn up.
Many thanks for your help

If what I think you are saying the fill pipe with the pipe that hangs from it is the crank case breather. I forget just when that style of breather was eliminated due to environmental reasons but what you are talking about s/b the breather pipe.

The pulsing probably means you have a problem usually indicates blow by but other things can cause it also. Do a compression check and nothing shows up then, if you can find one, there is a cylinder check that has a gauge on it and a air-hose from a compressor connects to it. I think there are other variations now to do the same thing. I used this type of gauge back in the dark ages  .

On this one you screw it into the spark plug hole then add air pressure to each cylinder. You want to see the cylinders hold pressure so it one drops with the air-pressure to it that should/could be your problem cylinder. It usually is rings but could be the piston also. The instructions should tell you how much pressure to use.

Cheers Lee I will see what compression the cylinders have and take it from there
