Tire Mounted on Front of Thing

Tire Mounted on Front of Thing
I have seen a spare tire mounted on the front of Things - above the front bumper, not on the hood. Was this an option? Or, is it an aftermarket product? Anyone know how they are mounted on the Thing?

The spare tire is stored inside the front trunk, where VW intended it.
