Hi, been a member for a while, but not posted before.
Anyway, I have a vw trike with a type 1 1300 engine. The trike only weighs 440kg and has a 1300 transaxle. The engine is a bit poorly, using a bit to much oil, that sort of thing. So, I'm going to rebuild it over the winter.

But I am doing it on a very tight budget, as in, as little money as possible, using second hand if I can.

I have just got hold of a set of 1835 cylinders and pistons, and have decided to go that route.
But, I don't need anything over the top cam wise and figure I may just stick with stock internals.
What should I be checking to see what I can re-use on the insides?

Also, what carb or carbs would people recommend? Bearing in mind I need to do this on a budget, but I also need the engine to be able to eat up the miles, be reliable, and travel at motorway speeds easily (70-80mph)

To be fair, the very tight budget is going to be a big problem for ya.

Really, a stock engine would do what you want in a trike. What are you starting with for heads, carb and ignition? Exhaust?

The 92mm pistons and cylinders are supposed to fit on the 1300 block but as I remember the hole needed to be bored in the block is pretty big. If you do a on-line search companies who sell VW stuff recommend not using the big bore pistons and cylinders but recommend staying smaller using 1776 or 1835 sizes.

For a cam (my opinion) I would stay away from too big of a cam. Since I run/cruise in the sand I chose to use a high lift short duration grind which gives an RPM limit of ~ (roughly) 5500 RPMs but gives more torque than HP gains which I suspect to be all you need. Again, what this style of cam gives is torque vs. HP hence maybe longer engine life too. Again... this is my an opinion for considering options!

Be very careful with purchasing used stuff, especially internal used stuff, and have them looked at by someone who knows and can measure before money changes hands. Its easy to get into another replacement situation which I did once with a used (a few miles before the vehicle got totaled) but supposedly new build VW engine (a poor quality rebuild).

If a bug with a stock engine can go into the speed range you are talking about a trike, because of a similar light weight situation, should also be able to do it but maybe using a longer period of time than a hopped up engine would give.
