No money for the pit build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

No money for the pit build

Post by shifty2006 »

Well I guess I will start a post searching for knowledge from all of you Baja Gurus. I have been searching hi and low for help with my issues on my motor swap and Baja5 suggested reading Leathernecks build which had a plethora of information I will be using for my build. I will start off with a little back ground on the baja it's a 64 which I have been working on for years now with just parts and such collected when I can squeeze money out from other projects (always too many irons in the fire). Lets see some of the specs. 091, 3x3 on coils, 6 wider warrior with 2 1/2x 1 arms on coils, stretched 10" longer, rear disc front drum, and the latest is working on adding a j35a4 as the dp 1600 is just tired and honestly conversion will cost me about the same to build a new one.

Where I am sitting with the conversion is motor is sitting attached and intake is flipped I blocked off the port on the head and under the intake. I have a million questions though because I sent a harness to NY a few months back and it disappeared into the abyss so while I got impatient I ordered a harness from minitec which upon arrival everything fitted as expected until I got to the original throttle body side I have two plugs on the harness side which are round and on the motor side are rectangle, then there isn't a plug for egr or knock sensor. As you can see from the pictures the (round plugs that should be rectangle) have the correct amount of pins on is two pin and the other a three but this stuff is beyond me.

I would love to know things like can I fully remove egr or will it put the motor in limp mode, what vacuum lines or cooling lines can be removed. OR even can I use this harness that minitec sent me with my motor. My guess is that its from an earlier model j35 mine is from an 04 0dyssey and is a J35a4 and is cable throttle. I had a bunch of questions on radiators and fuel system but reading leathernecks build that ironed most of that out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Removing the EGR is fine. You can delete most of the coolant lines. Upper and lower radiator hoses are about all you need. You can keep the 2 lines that run to the throttle body to help with warm up if you are in colder climates. I have my IAC blocked off because I got tired of surfing issues but the valve is still there and plugged in. Like I said, you should be able to swap the connector at the MAP for the newer square plug, just make sure the wires match up to their proper locations. I would try to invest in the factory ETM. Look on eBay for a 2004 model year, it will include the previous years back to 1999 so you have wire colors for your harness.

Sweet thank you for the info on this. I will order one of those books hopefully it will be here when I get back from my next fire assignment this fire season doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon so it looks like ill be missing another desert season with the baja... I keep telling myself the swap is worth it when it is all done but just like last night the new seals show up for the injectors so i jump into replacing them and the injectors literally were disintegrating in my hands so now ill just have to order some new ones.

Hey baja5 had a little time finally got the wires extended and the ones swapped to the new plug but yet another question. The sensor on top of the throttle body I believe to be purge control can I remove this sensor? It says denso 223 which ol google says purge control?

Yes, you do not need the purge control solenoid. Just remove it and cap the port into the throttle body.

Baja5 I don’t mean to be a pest might you have a picture of all the things you have capped off I’m looking at the vacuum lines now and coolant lines.
