VW Bug 1963 Street Turbo

Post by villemil »

So I bought a replacement for my burned down drag bug project but I also wanted a street bug for summertime cruising!
And, I got this beauty! She is from -63, already 58 years old! With this one I need to take it easy with the modifications but I still miss that turbo whistle and that power :D

So to the actual thing:
I want to build a RELIABLE all street turbo engine. Maybe even with stock stroke? Any suggestions what route should I take?
The car cannot be cutted down in any way so everything has to fit to a stock bug under the decklid and it still needs to keep that original look. Intercooler will be really hard, atleast I think so. Also turbo propably has to go under the engine tins so either blow trough or EFI?
Also the reason I want to turbo this one too is that N/A power is expensive  So what I really want is best bang for the buck with good power/reliability ratio.

So give me your best advice for this to build!

I bought her completly stock and swapped the wheels for genuine Lemmerz Sprintstars, 4" wide front and 5.5" rear. New steering wheel and those really sexy seat covers haha :D

I'd say copy clonebug's setup, he's shown what relatively stock engines with boost can handle for years. Nice new bug it looks nice, and my favorite shade of paint:)

Thank you! Really love this one too, this one is definely a keeper! Paid only 3000€ for it and have been dailying it since purchase! :)
A lot of rust fixing to do but in Finland the winter is long and dark so plenty of time for engine work too :D
I was thinking about going for I/H beam rods, mahle pistons and barrels and maybe panchito heads :?:
Just need to hear from you guys before I make any purchases or anything haha

I'm all for a stock engine with a turbo. Mine was awesome. Figure out a way to run some big boost and you won't be disappointed! I was using e85 and ran 30 psi of boost. It was plenty fast. I'm guessing 220hp or so.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm seriously considering going EFI aswell so would the best bet for a street engine to get motorcycle ITB's or just go for one center mounted throttlebody?

Best is relative. ITB's are probably best, but a single is cheaper and easier to plumb.

After reading about this I made a choice to go for single and for similar style intake I had on my draw through setup.
2" intake piping and 50-55mm throttlebody will propably be okay with CB's high flow end pieces and 044 CNC mini wedgeport heads :)

Makes sense. 50mm and 2" intake should be just fine for that.

Preparing my crankcase for machining. Going to do it myself at the place where I work.
This crankcase is from the old turbo build. Measured everything and it was all good exept the place where the pulley is. Going to fix it by machining in a sand seal. Just have to do sand seal, open it up for 90.5mm barrels and machine the deck.
That being said, what is the exact measurement I need to machine the case to fit 90.5mm mahle barrels?

Also got this book yesterday, only paid 20€ for it :D

Thank you for this. After looking for the case measurements I found two different ones. 94.5mm (same as in your message) and 96mm. Which one is correct for Mahle set with B Pistons?
