Magnesium Crankcase Details

Post by cal 67 »

Picked up a never used rare Type 4 mag crankcase, and I'd thought I'd leave pics here so you could pick-out details that were particular to only this version.

Some things I noticed:

Webbing differences
Distributor clamp mounting area differences
Lower bosses for engine mounts protrude farther
Oil filler flange smaller and clocked differently
Additional dipstick portion
Crankcase vent up near breather tower
Linkage mount stands taller
Uses four shorter through-bolts, and two longer ones in the centers
No windage tray provisions
Slots above/below main saddles - crankcase ventilation aid?

Good info!
I have this 'V' coded case which is magnesium as well, but I always forget if it was the head or the case that got the smaller openings for the pushrod tubes?

Hey Tabari looking good! Thanks for sharing on the 4um where this mythical case has been mentioned in low whispers for years.

Did you find a case code anywhere? I was looking for one when I took this pic but I didn't see it

Hi Monte,

The mag type 4 cases have been discussed in the type4rum before (search should reveal that), but the often used 'VO' is imo just a 'V' followed by one or more zero's.

This is mine as an example:

There has been a batch unused (NOS) cases on the markt, that did not have a code stamped in them. The used cases (first year production VW411) did however.

Thanks Wally! Perhaps Tabari has an unused "replacement" case? Very cool either way

New replacement cases had no numbers as far as I know.
