My 1970 Chop Top Volksrod Build Thread

Post by V8Nate »

I hope this is the right section for this car.
Well since I just finished my aunt's dune buggy build I'm onto the next vw project which is my volksrod.

As the car currently sits

Motor-
Kaddie Shack 1914cc 108hp 116ft lb torque
Engle 125 cam
KS 40x35 round port heads (Empi heads)
KS kadrons
1.5 sidewinder style exhaust

Trans-
Kcr Pro street 4:11 w/.82 4th welded hubs ect.

Suspension-
Stock rear
Beam extension
Front disk brakes

I got the car a couple of years ago from a good friend of mine and I haven't done much to it besides put some different front seats so I could fit in the car, change oil and drive it! But now comes the time to do some upgrades!

I am going to take the dual kads off and put my dual 40 idfs w/ 32 vents from my 2058cc and also remove the 009 w/ pertronix for a compufire dis-ix w/009

I think that will be a nice little upgrade for this engine

So far the plan I have for this car is get the motor dialed in with the web's and compufire and eventually pull this motor out and put it in my wife's bug "Jolly Bug". Before I pull the motor out I'll have to build/revamp a motor for it, my supercharged 1641. I think that motor would be perfect for this car! As it sits that motor is slapped together with all of my used garbage parts with the exception of a new set of stock china heads with single high rev springs. It has a amr500 on it with a Rochester 1 barrel off a chevy 250 straight 6, I plan on rebuilding it with all parts I already have. So far I have a old(but in very good shape) cast 78mm stroker crank, 90.5 A pistons, vz25 cam, and the supercharger will get upgraded to a sc12. I will line bore and open up the case/heads at home when it comes time to build the engine.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Those headlights look awful low for the state of WA. I've been checked over headlights and other things a few times in the past, so I sometimes react so others don't have to go through the ordeal. Things right now things like this aren't being checked like they were unless there is an accident of something like that, but this might change in the not-too-distant future especially if an inspection is needed for the title.

I appreciate it Lee, I bet you they are on the low side for the law. I have been asked by a few people now about no fenders, exposed motor, no wipers, no seat belts, plexiglass windows and how I don't get pulled over all the time and get handed a handful of tickets. I don't know why I don't get harassed by police with this car but I think the Volkswagen gods are giving me good luck and I'll take it:)

Years ago I was coming home from the dunes here in WA and at a rest stop when a State Patroller pulled in and very politely asked if he could look at my buggy on the trailer. I said yes and he went up on the trailer and suddenly came down with an attitude. He said that with the turning brake handles he'd better not see me on the street as they are illegal to have on the street (I knew that guys were using them on the street especially when they were being chased but one of the kids I kind of knew did get killed when using them on the cement street when he was being chased. His tire was digging into a seam in the concrete at the same time as he applied the brake to that wheel causing the buggy to hook violently flipping over killing himself (his buggy had a hoop, not a cage which made it worse).

I took my license plates off and that ended that problem.

Wipers and windshields were a problem on the dunes but taking the windshield off solved that problem (if you had a windshield then operating wipers are mandatory). With all the salt air by the beach the windshield would get crusty inside and out making one's vision not that good. Getting rid of the windshield and frame solved that problem.

I think a lot of it depends on where you are and what is going on at the time (e.g., how many officers and how busy they are) and not getting talked to.

WA (and especially in some town) used to be very aware of vehicles but now, with so few officers, other things seem to be more important. I am surprised though that you haven't been at least talked to about it.

I'm surprised too! I'm glad they are concerning themselves with more important business than bugging people about headlight height and lack of wiper blades(although I could see it being a liability if in the right circumstances) this car is very seldom driven at night and definitely not in the rain it doesn't even have door plexiglass yet

I think that rig has a lot of promise. I especially like the headlights. The tail lights not so much. As I get older and less interested in the offroad scene I'm seeing myself with something similar and with a stupid big engine.

Have fun. Look forward to seeing what you do with it!

You got a lot of fun parts there. I looked up that Malpassi reg/filter as I was never satisfied with any of the setups I had and that looks like a really fine unit. Bookmarked in my build list. TY

Thanks OC! The Malpassi is where its at, they make boost referenced regulators I believe and also ones without the glass fuel filter incase you weren't wanting that bit I liked it. The tail lights could definitely be done in a less trailer way haha

Here's the latest updates, I went thru the carbs, got a empi 009 modified to fit the compufire ignition and installed that on the motor. The intakes are bolted on and all that's left on the down rods is to weld the ends. I still need to mount the fpr and make fuel linesbut it's getting closer. I had to go thru the rockers and do some re shimming and replace the rocker studs.

I took the decklid I had cut to fit the supercharger in my 66 and fit it to this car. Due to the chopped top I am unfortunately unable to use decklid hinges so I had to make up some brackets and use hood pins. I also trimmed the corners of the decklid to see the taillights and made a cover out of some plexiglass to cover the supercharger hole until it gets that motor ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

It's been a while since an update, everything is running fairly decent and I have rejetted the carbs with my seat of the pants meter until I put a wideband in the car. One thing I found with this motor is it has some serious timing scatter above 2700rpm. I thought it was the empi 009 so I went thru a German bosch unit and same thing, then I thought maybe it was the compufire and put the old distributor and ignition system in and same situation. It would literally go from 30 degrees and swing from 40 to TDC all over the place so there is obviously some slop in the distributor drive gear so this engine will eventually get crank fired ignition. I've got about 250 miles on it so far and even drove it to work yesterday:) I also put some new mirrors on it and a friend of mine is giving me a set of 15x8 slotted mags for the rear so now I will have to find a set of skinny's for the front

If I remember correctly there are 2 009 distributers out there with one style being better than the other.

The advice I was given (years ago) was to take the distributer(s) to a shop and have them "spun". This gives the condition of the bushings, the advance (manual) and the rest of the distributer.

This advice also is a good idea for other distributers, new or used as I have even seen new ones not comply the way they should.

For what it is worth....

Thanks Lee, I wouldn't even mind finding one of those machines for myself if it was cheap enough:) I've never seen timing scatter like this before in my life, I even tried 3 different timing lights.

They went out of style when the electric units first started to come in to play, but I think they/some may still be around.

A good shop should be able to figure out the pluses and minuses and may even be able to do the custom things to it the rest of a new system might need.

There is a lot of info on the 009 distributer here if you don't just read the first page. There seems to be newer versions of the non-vacuum advance distributor (if I read correctly) and I think I saw something like it can be "recurved" also. I also think I saw the RPM limit was somewhere around 5500 which is where, in my case, my "high lift short duration" reground camshafts limit is designed to work at.

Not sure if it works well with all the new electronic setups that are now being used but maybe some info there might work or talking to Arts friend here in WA who is deep into electronics.
