fresh 2l type 4 hydraulic wiped cam

Have a question. I have a 2l type 4 hydraulic with a wiped cam. New stock VW cam and lifters. Cam went flat EXCEPT for the lobe closest to the cam gear. I looked at the oil flow diagram and it fills from the center and goes to 2 lifters each way.

And a related dumb question - where does the cam get oil from? Splashed from sump or somewhere else in the engine?

Any insight why this happened? 1 was fine, but the others were not? I do not want to repeat this.

Thanks in advance.

Where / who supplied the cam & lifters?

Cam lobs are lubed indirectly. Plenty of oil thrown around by the crankshaft.

What oil grade / brand?

Yeah - realized the way the cam is lubricated. Shell Rotella Diesel with Redline break in additive. Cam had VW part numbers and a rivetted gear. Dont know the brand of lifters. Was the cam reground? Don't know. Was supposed to be a mild performance grind, but also was supposed to be a solid lifter mild performance cam, but that wasn't what I got. No real documentation on the engine... There is another piece to this. Initially reinstalled the Weber progressive that was on the original engine. Discovered stuck power valve after the fact, so it was rich through the break in. Was told that the cam was already broken in by the builder after we did the break in here.

I saw your post over on the Samba.

Before anyone can help they REALLY need to see some pictures of the wiped lobes and lifters.

You can pull the lifters without splitting the crankcase. Sounds like the cam was a reground?
