Camshaft grinds

Hello.
Been gathering my ideas for my type4 project.
Currently I’m thinking a 1.7 engine (I have a “W” core), with turbo, inter cooling & EFI. It will be getting upright cooling & I already have most of the parts for that.
One aspect which I’ve pondered is the camshaft. Stock isn’t well loved but I’m keen to stick with a mild grind to keep the Rev range within the 6k stock limit. The stock grind runs out of puff at 5.5k I believe so a bit more would be good.
I was looking at a Scat C25 because it’s available in Europe for okay price (£200-ish). There are big price euro camshafts available for 600 euro but pricey. Webcam is a solid choice but supply seems to be a problem. EMW needs to be ordered direct from USA and I’ve seen comments that their grinds are a bit peaky.
I contacted a UK camshaft manufacturer who has a solid reputation. They can make / grind a type 4 cam to my grind profile of choice. Price is around £125 +tax. Bit extra with hardening, if requested.
So what your suggestions?

the Scat cams have terrible QA so you need to check all the lobes for lift and timing , If you get a good one then it would be ok , I would lean to getting get local business to do one , but still QA it yourself , as long as they are happy to correct mistakes .
CB Performance will put a "Type 1" grind on a Type 4 blank for you , same cost as their normal type4 cams . I had one done , it was accurate .

A well know gent suggested the Webcam 86A as being strong on mid range.
Tried to compare to grinds such a Schleicher 292 but that seems difficult. In theory it has far more duration (292 @ 1mm) but it’s quoted as being a mild camshaft.

A 86A would be a great match. You could opt for a 112 degree lobe seperation, which would make it a bit more efficient for turbo use, and give you a bit more power in the upper range.

Obviously the basic cam timing markers for a camshaft are a long way from a full profile so there may need to be some extrapolation.
They do sell a few type1 grinds (including a formula Vee version), so have some context.
If I could find an example with damage but at least one good lobe, they could put it in the cam rig. But they are very scarce in my location.

MORE DURATION IS FOR MORE CCs...

292 is the advertised duration, not the duration at a certain lift with Schleicher cams. The lift is only 8.5mm, so it is a relatively mild cam.

Have you checked at
Stateside Tuning-Camshafts they carry several manufactures, EMW-EURORACE, SCHLEICHER CAMSHAFTS & WEB, you can see what they have in stock.

His website is completely out of date

He still is in business etc & very highly regarded but the stock list & prices are probably 10 yrs old.
I’ve not had a chance to speak to the cam manufacturer again as I’ve been busy on other things. I was considering reaching out to Jim @ stateside to see if he was interested in helping get a UK manufacturer set up producing type 4 cams at reasonable prices. Chances are Jim will have plenty of ideas / thoughts on what cam profiles are worth producing.

Hi!
I run a 86A in my 2.0Ltr type 4 with 41X34 valves,90-ish grams lifters,single HD-springs and stock pushrods.Although not professionaly tuned,I find it not to be strong in the lower Rpm range(I expected more)but it likes to rev:the limiter is set at 6750rpm and it reaches that quickly.A German engine builder says this combination should be able to reach 7K-rpm.In a 1.7Ltr I would think that this would shift the powerband up even higher.

Thanks for the insight.

I don’t mind shifting the torque curve up by 500-800rpm, maybe 1k. Not planning to go above 6K & expecting to lose low rpm torque as there’s no free lunch.
I thought the stock red line was 6k but maybe it’s more like 5.6k
Had a busy few weeks but plan to catch up with the cam manufacturer next week.

Just got on guys…doing a 1.8 t4 mostly stock except I have 1.7 Qcode heads (411/bus engine) I will be rebuilding the heads and fly cutting them to fit the larger jugs… no please take it easy on me lol… I would like to know what cam would you guys run in that basically stock engine to give me a little more oomph? I heard the WebCam 142 is a good choice. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I would like to see in the final product is some low and torque so I can get into normal driving traffic quicker. My 1.8 that’s in my 75. Bus now works well but it might be getting a little tired. Thanks in advance Guys.

I run high lift short duration regrind cam shafts for more bottom end torque out on the sand.
A lot of people run the regrinds on the street also assuming no performance racing on the street or on the track (there can be advantages there also). Cam shafts can also be modified for higher RPMs also but racing cams are out there also.
More bottom end torque but it also causes the top RPMs to be lower.

With decent rod bolts and valve springs, a well balanced T4s mechanical rev limit is much higher than 6k, and it doesn't suffer from T1 stock crank center main whip issues at all.
Having said that, I vote Web73, as on an actual 1.7 the stock cam actually works well, and a Web73 is just a little more, and AFAIK Webcam is the only ACVW cam manufacturer that nitrides their cams. The stockish cam will also boost drivabilty and aid spooling the turbo.

The web73 or the Raby 9590 from the type 4 store.....which is made by Webcam. Especially still worth the price/value if you are buying the complete cam kit. Do the double thrust cam bearing mod. Ray
