Speeduino and injection upgrades

Post by manxman! »

I am planning a type 4 build for my 914. And I’m weighing induction options.
I have several Weber set ups and am proficient at tuning them. But at the end of the day, they are carburetors and have the usual drawbacks that come with carbs.
I’m wondering if it’s feasible to use the factory intake tubes and fit them with modern injectors. A 2bbl throttle body from an Jetta. Add the needed updated sensors and manage it all with a Speeduino ECM. I’d like to use a crank trigger so timing can also be managed. I’m looking at a 2.3L ish build. I also happen to have a Holley 4bbl throttle body injection system but it is likely too large.
Anyone gone down this rabbit hole? Opinions on this?

Ive used a speeduino & it’s mostly effective & definitely strong value for money.

You can get crank trigger set ups. My preference is the versions from VW Speedshop (in UK) but there are others.

CB Performance also make a good mini camsync that replaces the distributor so you can run sequential fuel & spark.

My type4 will have upright cooling so I won’t be able to use the full stock intake but converting to modern injectors is possible with some fabrication. Not aware of any off the shelf kits.

I like the idea of using the distributor as a cam sensor. I was envisioning how to fab fuel rails last night. 👍

The Camsync part. Uses a hall sensor & half moon style of trigger. (Correction, it uses a magnet to trigger the hall sensor)

Fair value for money i think

A 72 tooth wheel just fits in a 009s (or most VW distributors) have used a 36-1 setup for years on a T4 in my 73 square.
(RC truck steel drive gears, 32 pitch, touch of weld for a "missing tooth")
On MSextra 2/ms3 (or speeduino???) that can be used for full sequential operation.

As the distributor on an ACVW is gear driven off the crank, there is very little timing jitter (compared to a typical american V8), and the ECU averages the hell out of it anyway, so there (in my testing) no measurable timing jitter.

I'm about to try it on a MK1 Cabriolet, which drives the oil pump via a secondary shaft, which drives the distributor... sort of like a Chevy, which drive the pump and dist via the camshaft, but on the wcvw with a timing belt so no floppy timing chains. Hope to see how well it works coming weekend.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Thanks for the info. There is so much good stuff out there. I’ve dabbled in FI for years. These days anything you’d like to do is not that hard. Just a matter of getting the parts together.
