On the topic of books, I would recommend:

Chilton, Haynes, Clymer, and the HPBooks series of special issues like electrical, carburetors, body work, brakes, handling, etc.

The best are:
(1) the 'idiot book' (How to keep your volkswagen alive, a manual of step-by-step procedures for the complete idiot), (2) the Bently manual, and the (3) HPBooks Baja Bugs & buggies.

I would also suggest the "Bug Me" set of videos to anyone who wants to learn a lot of important VW info fast.

There are a few other books that I like.

1) VW Beetle, Performance handbook by Keith Seume.

(pretty much any other book by him, as well)

2) Not a book, but the interior and exterior installation videos by California Pacific/JBugs is excellent.

Books I would recommend are Bentley and Haynes manuals. The BugMeVideos are great also. A lot of people recommend John Muir's idiot book. I don't recommend that book, however. Illustrations are very poor and it is my feeling that it has a lot of bad advice in it. The best source of information that I have found is from the rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled newsgroup.
