whats the best tranny oil for beetle !!

just want my tranny to last a long time. i changed it last year with conventional 80-90 tranny oil. so i'm thinking of synthetic what do you guys think

You'll probably get a lot of replies on this one concerning the GL-4/GL-5 issue. I use a "meets GL-3 and 4" brand because it was all i could find at the time. the newer GL-5 supposedly eats at the brass parts in your trans, but i remember reading that it only occured at temps over 250 or so...so does your tranny ever get that hot? i know mine doesn't. It's up to you, but i would definitely recommend using synthetic. it will make a big difference in feel, especially if your trans is worn. also it won't be as thick on cold mornings. there is also a newer GL-5 oil that won't hurt brass at all, i think the designation is GL-5 M-1. someone correct that if it's wrong. Good Luck when you change it...what a messy job. lol

Very good Jordan, you're at the head of the class. The whole GL-4/Gl-5 myth will die soon enough since the GL-5 superceeds the GL-4 and its only a matter of time before you won't be able to buy GL-4 anymore because there won't be any left.
I second the synthetic gear oil recommendation. I had a friend who was complaining about the poor shifting in her Golf. After she changed to synthetic, it shifted much better. It wasn't as good as a fresh rebuild, but you can't have everything. 75W-90 will help it shift better in the cold.
