Hey there, great board you have here. I just started wrenching on a 73 T1. I was wondering if removeing heater boxes and added J tubes were good or bad as far as keeping the engine cool? I've also seen these deck lid stand off kits. They look cool but what would running the car with the deck lid off do to the cooling?
I hope to make some new freinds and know I will pick up some good info here, so thanks in advance.

Hey welcome,
You will find some of the most knowledgeable VW people here and in the SuperBeetles only forum.

Heater boxes versus J tubes won't make a cooling difference, though some disagree, saying that with J tubes, the cooling tins don't have quite as tight a gap, which would normally be filled by heater boxes, thus losing some cooling effectiveness. But I have never seen hard proff of that.

The stand-off's cool the engine by adding a higher volume off cooling fresh air to your fan, and by carrying off extra heat from the top of the engine. I have some on my car right now and I notice at least a 20 degree temp drop.
3 negative points about stand-offs:
1. Your engine gets dirtier. Change/clean your air filter more often. Dust and twigs build up.
2. You really can only use the during summer months because in the Winter the extra cold air will keep the engine from heating up properly. The carb will ice up quickly causing hesitation and stalling. VW has built in a series of devices meant to bring the carb up to operating temperature beacuse since it is so far from the heads and lacks heat, it ices up quick. Stand-offs negate these devices in winter, which are only mildly effective to begin with.
3. I just don't think they look good. I have the out of necessity because I drive in a hot area in the summer.

Cody, thanks for the info. I probably wont drive this car in the winter. What do you think about running the car with no deck lid at all? Hot air rises, but will I have no cool brought into the engine without a deck lid. What do ya think???

not a problem , just going to get dirty but it will run cooler . some people run it that way on a hot day , also to show off the nice motor . other problems i can think of is rain, dirt ,solid objects, you don't want that stuff on your motor. some places it might be against the law to drive around like that.....but it sure looks cool!!!!

I mostly want to show off the motor, and if it will run cooler thats just an added bonus. I don't mind spending a little time each day or so cleaning on the motor.
thanks dude

If you plan on running the bug with the decklid off alot, you might look into getting a bumper bracket license plate holder with license plate light. This will keep the cops off your case at night. Also, and this isnt likely, but sometimes people can't keep their hands off things and may decide to be morons and switch your plug wires wound as a joke. Happened to a friend of mine... just food for thought...
