frozen pistons

Was able to acquire a type IV case out of a rusted out old VW van. Only problem is I can't get the pistons out as I'm stripping down the case. Wondering if you had suggestions. I've used every technique I could come across in How to keep your VW alive and other engine rebuild kits but none seem to work. Wondering if I could split the case and undo the pistons from the rods?

'fraid not,
the pistons will not pass the part of the casting that holds the main bearings

Is it just one piston or one side? If it is, I've encounter it before. Remove the p/c from the side you can remove. Split the case and then undo the rods from the crankshaft. It make the job a lot more reasonable. Just my $0.02USD.

It's one on each side. It's very frustrating. I even had someone tell me to soak it in Kerosene to try and break it up and that didn't seem to make a difference.

Its junk (piston and cylinder) torch it! Heat can do wonders. The case is aluminum no worries about the magnesium igniting, just don't melt it! Crude? Heck yes, but I'll bet it works!

A torch and hammer worked for me on my 914 1800cc case. I had 3pistons seized. After splitting the case I found a rod seized.

No joke, try liberal amounts of Coke (Pepsi). If its just baked on crap, the Coke will make lite work of it. Let it soke 24h and then smack with a hammer

Whoa! Leave it to you Aussies to think of some novel new use for Coca Cola. I know it disolves teeth, but what, does Coke run '101 Uses for Coke' marketing contests down there or something? Do you know that up here we DRINK the stuff? Jeez, an organic solvent. I don't think I wanted to know that...

I must admit stephen that if my Grandfather were alive, this would have been his first suggestion. He was a mechanic and actually had a small soaking tub that he would fill with Coke to loosen rusted bolts and things. But this was many years ago and I figured Coke had changed since then.

Believe it or not we use a chemical called Lark to disolve rust on tubing and its main ingredent is coke. Works slow but it does a good job.
