Keep the original. The originals work very well at filtering the air while the chrome ones tend to filter less.

Your better off W/orignal. A VW engine (stock)
runs best W/ 4" extension tube above the carb,
using the OE aircleaner, you have the extension.

Denny is absolutely right.

Both the oil bath aircleaners, and the later paper sytle, have a velocity stack built in - above the inlet to the carby. This smooths the airflow as it enters the carby. The engine expects it to be there, and the carby is set up for it.

Also, the VW air filters are quite effective. The smaller the filter area, the easier it is to clog the filter, and do you know if it's got a fine enough filter mesh anyway?

The other thing is that the VW air filter has the fitting for the crank case venting tube - coming up from the oil filler neck. A lot of aftermaket filters don't have this feature.

With the positive crankcase ventilation system used in the VW engine (slots behind the engine pulley and a spiral groove in the crankshaft which pulls in fresh air) you NEED the vent tube up to the air cleaner, since there is a lot of oily airflow out of the filler neck.

One more reason to use the stock air cleaner: There is the pipe and hose connection that draws the hot air from under the right side of the engine by the push rod tubes that brings this hot air into the aircleaner and into the carb. This warmer air keeps the engine from stalling out before total engine warm up and also when stopping while driving. This is most enoying and prevelent in cooler temps. What happens is that the warm air helps the gas to atomize correctly so the carb can send the air/gas mix into the engine for proper burning. without this set up, cooler air will cause the engine to stall. Stay stock, that's what the VW engineers designed.
