car wont start at all (HELP)
aloha. well i just got into the air-cooled circuit about a year ago. but have a lot of mechanic epxerience with other cars and especially on trucks. for it not to start could be a cause of a lot of different mishaps on the motor; timing, carb like you said, fuel lines, other stuff, but i don't want to discourage you. and you should always spend an extra 15-25 bucks for a shop manual specified for that certain model and year of the vehicle you own. either bentley or haynes. they have everything well mostly everything about any kind of car out there. and if you don't have that, go ask a well known mechanic you can trust. good luck. i know this wasn't useful, but just some pointers. cause i was in your shoes when i first started working on my first truck. and don't be afraid to ask the parents for an extra buck or two. good luck

It sounds like the engine isn't turning over. Is this correct?
If the engine isn't turning over, it could be that your battery is dead, your cables are dirty, the ground strap from the transmission to the frame could be disconnected.
If the car has been sitting for a while, it's probably just a dead battery. Hook up a charger for a while use some jumper cables.

Try Speedy Jim's procedure (after trying battery advice): http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/eng_strt.htm
All a VW needs to start is compression, air/fuel mixture, and spark. This page will walk you through it. This helped me and I hope it works for you.
New (old) bug huh? Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and have fun doing it.
