Head Question

Post by NeoDem »

I am rebuilding a stock 1600 dual port type 1 engine and see some heads for sale marked 041 heads. What does the 041 stand for and can I use these heads on a stock 1600 motor?

thanks for any help-

041 is the VW ID number, if the heads have cylinder openings identical to your stock heads they will bolt on, your stock cylinders are 85.5mm. 041 heads originally had 39mm intake valves and 32mm exhaust valves, sometimes the 32mm exhaust valves are swapped for 35.5mm exhaust valves, which is the only combination that you would want if you have a choice. 041 heads have a tarnished history because of the original 39/32 valve configuration and cracking in the combustion chamber that eventually makes them unusable.

The stock factory VW head number is marked 040. These are the only heads I would run on a stock 1600. Best wishes!
