Well I think this has been discussed before. The auto tranny is too wide and deep to be used in a bug, also you would have to remove the forks that hold the engine/trans to clear the pan on the automatic. So now what do you do to hold the engine up? In a bus and a type3 they used and engine hanger. I hope this helps.
