I want to get a better looking crank pulley so I'm looking around for one. How is bugpack and scat for quality?

I got a scat crank pully, and mine wobbles real bad, i dont know if that is normal or not? It seems to level out @ speeds though.

Nothing beats a stock pulley. I have found that after market pulley's don't sling the oil back into the case all that well. I have tried a few aftermarkets to date.

If you must go with an aftermarket pulley, avoid the ones with 4 holes/slots - they're much more prone to cracking than the 3- or 5-hole pieces as a rule. Something about the inherent harmonics at work, I suppose.

I love my aftermarket degree'd pulley... so easy to time. No problems so far and it's a cheap EMPI to boot...

So would a solid pulley be better to run? I want one with degree marks on it.

They make rings that you can attach to non-ringed pulleys... I'm sure they work on a stock pulley.

Dunno about that, Skeith. I haven't seen a stock pulley that had a flat lip on the edge that you could stick a 'degree ring' on. The stick on degree rings are to replace degree rings that are worn out.

If i wanted to buy a nice quality pully, i think i would buy a Berg steel pully. although a few more bucks then most like to spend. Autocraft pullies are quality pieces. (a 2 piece unit with steel hub and aluminum outer) Bugpack now makes a 2 piece similar to the autocraft, but once again, the autocraft is $$$ so im sure bugpack is similar but i dont know for sure.
Scat makes what looks to be a nice quality unit. i got my hands on one recently, but for my personal reasons was not trilled at the placement of the belt groove compared to what i have used in the past. I recently set up a motor, using a Berg pully i had laying around. (but thats mine and a tool for set up now) and so i purchased a scat pully to put on this motor only to have it touch on the oil pump studs. although not a real problem. a file job and it was clear again. This was on a 30mm melings pump as well. it sticks out a lot farther then most might have. other then that, a nice piece.
What i can't tell you is who has the right groove placement compared to the stock pully. one or the other might need some fan belt alignment adjustment. i have never compared any to a legitimate stock unit.

How does a Berg pulley make the engine last longer? I don't see the connection.

My 1970 bug (which I bought new) still has it's original pulley - 248,000 miles later. Would a Berg pulley make the engine last longer than that?

I like the Berg pully, I have two.

Make the engine last longer? don't think so, maybe on a fully balanced crank assy.

Last the life of the engine? Yes, it will out last the engine.

BUT they can, will and have wreck junk cranks! or junk cranks will wreck them.

reck 'em darn near killed 'em!

So how would I be able to tell If I have a junk crank? If I pull in and out on the crank there is no play in it,and my engine runs great, very smooth. I want to run a good quality crank pulley. I bought this bug 2nd hand and have no history of engine, but it burns no oil, runs fine.

I don't really want to go into what I think is a good crank or junk. I will just piss someone off and receive flames.

If it is a stock crank you are most likely OK.
