i'm looking for a squareback or a fastback for a reasonable price. i've never owned one before, so i don't really know what not to get.
i just found a '72 squareback for sale and it's supposed to be in GREAT condition. the only thing is that it's an automatic. i've owned a ghia and a bus before and i really love stick shifts, but i'm willing to overlook that if the automatics are reliable. so... how reliable are they and how much more expensive are they to fix?

The type3 full Automatic is one of the best out there. In fact some of the parts are still being used in todays Audis. Rebuild kits are available too. Also they aren't dependent on vacuum like the type1 autostick, so you can up the HP of the engine too. You might want to go over to the type3 section of this site and do a search. or you could even try www.vwtype3.org for more info on these cars. I hope this helps.
