No reason to post this other than to say as much as I know about type Is and watercooled VWs, I'm simply not qualified to be an owner of a fine VW the likes of a type IV.
I really, truely think type IVs are the ultimate variation of the aircooled VW, but there are so many little quirks about them that I don't think I could deal with it. I'm far too impatient to find the little items that you simply cannot get anymore.
I'll keep reading your posts here, but, at least for now, I'm no longer going to actively look for a type IV (I'd have LOVED a non-69 411).

I am not really qualified either. I just wanted one, so I brought it mine of a friend. I didn't know much about them when I brought it, but I am learning. If I start worrying about where I am going to get parts from and what is going to wear out next, I would be too scared to drive it. So I don't worry. Hey its a bit tatty around the edges, but its a type 4! And I have one! How cool is it to say to own and drive one? Just pick a scrapper up and run it for a couple of years, its now or never!

I feel for you man!.. Everything that everyone has ever complained about in the type 1,2,3...you know ..everyone has owned one at one time or another..."needs a little more power" or "a little more heat" or "a little more room" or " a little better handleing" or " a little more comfortable" or or or! The type 4 had all of it...a better engine and transaxle..especially the 4 speed...and was still air cooled and well built. They got too complicated for the level of dealer training on this continent at that time...thats the main reason they were too expensive to own when they had major malfunctions. I have owned 7. The one I have is the most complete, has been ugly awaiting body gaskets for longer...and is mechanically, totally restored, and improved. Driving it is a joy...even more so than the various almost perfect bugs and type 3 I have owned. Ray

My first car was a 55k mile 72' 411 four door with auto and injection. Alaska blue metallic. Got it for 500 bucks! I remember having to learn on the injection...fast. No one had taken care of the soft parts and they rotted off. A hard teacher this car was...but a good one. In 1980 when I got this car...I remember seeing a least one row in each VW junkyard of camparatively unscathed 411 and 412. They usually died of something too expensive for them to be worth repairing by their owners. I found over time that most of the problems people experienced ...serious or not ...were due to inconsistant maintenance...and poor dealer prep and knowlage. These cars were always a fabulous drive. I agree, if you can only find a beater, and can get it to run correctly...drive it! I used to really get bent that people just wore them out instead of stopping to restore them. There will be enough restored at some point to preserve the marque...but otherwise its just too late to have a huge industry of it...so just enjoy what you find! Ray

My point for posting that was basically, I'm not really going to look for one anymore. I have too many irons in the fire anyway.
