Another person with a Type 4? Good stuff! Welcome onboard, now just watch those heads turn as you drive around.

Check out this site for parts/advice. Jane Terry of the Type3&4 Club here in the UK can post parts overseas. http://www.hallvw.clara.net/

Tom's T4 corner is also a great source of info http://www.tunacan.net/t4corner/index.shtml

Good luck.

Yeah...it can be funny sometimes. A lot of people who don't look close enough think these are type 3's. Actually they are barely related at all. Washington seemed to either be a place where a lot of type 4 were shipped to...or just the last place they are starting to show up from. Ther were a good amount anyplace where it was cold. There were quite a few around here (actually north of here in Oklahoma and Kansas). There are a lot of things that can be done to get parts for these. Within about a month I will publish a simple fix here on the forum to allow you to be able to use stock type 3...or even some type 1...window rubber from rocky mt. motor works to replace all of the rubber on the type four. I have found replacements for most hard to find stuff, one way or the other. I am also working out the last of the details on clutch master and slave cyl. replacements . If you are looking for something, let me know...I may know where to get it...or what can cross match. Ray

Hello, drivers side mirrors. If stock detail is not crucial, the mirrors from a 72-72 type 3 fit great and look well. The type 4 stock mirrors were unique to type 4. But, if its just the glass, the late model type 3 glass will fit almost perfect. Dump the seal form the edge, clean the chrome and fill the entire inside (after tightening the nut) with high temp silicone or urethane sealer. Push the mirror down flush...trim the excess with an exacto later. It will look like stock if you are careful. Carpet...Talk to TMI or Sew-fine. It is the same carpet spec. as type 3. You can order it in roll an cut it to fit. Take your time...make sure it fits. Use a piece of seamstress chalk to mark where the original factory bining was on the edge. I would also take afew pictures of it. You can either send it back to TMI or Sew-fine...or take it to a local upholstery shop and they will sew on bindings. Maybe 75 bucks. The headliner is the tough part. Don't believe anyone like J.C. whitney when they list 411/412 headliners under the same part #'s as type 3...they are not even related. Seats...now we get creative. The rear seat kit for an armrest version 72 type 3 will fit almost perfect with a few tweeks. The front seats have a cushion bottom and back almost identical to I believe a low back 67-69 type 3. But you will have to strip your seats, sit down , look at them and bend a few of the spring wires in to streamline it a little. The seat backs will have to be split up the middle...and the panel and pocket installed to make them fit. Sew fine will also sell you nice insert cloth roll-goods to make your headrest covers and matching door panels from. Its not too hard, just time consuming. The chrome trim...if its rusted, you could strio it and paint/powdercoat it black...or you are going to have to find some more on a wrecked car. It holds the felt window scrapers. By the way, you can buy good quality felt strip from most building supply centers, in 1/4 and 3/8 " width for cheap. You will have to glue them in...but they look great. Ray

I too live in WA state (Enumclaw). My neighbors just moved down from Arlington (Harry/Pat Evans). AND I have a '72 411 I want to sell. Ran as of a year ago. Put in a new tranny and now it won't shift out of park. Been too busy to try anything else. I have many parts for it including NOS strut inserts! Also have a spare Type 4 case. The bad news is the passenger door was hit. It still opens, it's just not in perfect condition.

Hippyflower, do you know Darren here in Seattle???? The only T4 person in Seattle? If so I think we may have met, is your car dark blue?

gr8fx, the tranny is the same as a t3 and it sounds like a simple linkage problem. I would check that.
