I found an original manual for VW Dasher, and lo and behold the seats are the same type and configuration. This manual has good instructions for anyone who needs to do a rebuild on seats. (I can't find an original repair manual for my type 4).

If you need copies, e-mail me and I'll try to respond, ASAP.

Sara,
Are the seats similar as in direct replacement (bolt-in), or similar to rebuild?
Thanks,
Clay

Sara, I have been there before. They have the same front mount and usable rear mounts...but they are really a totally different size. But if seats are all you need, they will work. The width is slightly differnt as well, but can be worked with. I found that type 3 69 seat cover sets w/fold-wown armrest from sew fine and TMI fit the back seats of 411/412 all years...exactly. The front seat covers from a low back 67 type 3 kit will work perfect with a few tweeks to the seat springs and a slit down the back (to be covered up by the panel and pocket of the type 4. They will look nearly factory. You will have to bend the bottom cushion springs in about 1/2" in certain areas. You will also have to order extra material to do the headrest covers yourself. Ray

Same as in the fixings are the same and the instructions tell you how to rebuild the ones for the type four. The book has great illustrations of the parts and explains in detail, even how to take the seats apart and what to do to cut and refit a cover. I was amazed at the detail for repairs. I took a spare apart and it was exactly the same design. Clearly the size is different, and so I wouldn't fiddle with fitting in one from a dasher, but if you are doing an interior, the detail for repair is excellant.

Porche 914 from the same year fits exactly! I know, I have one in my 412.
