Windshield & Seal

Post by 3rd_slow_411 »

Okay all,
Does anybody have a NOS or 'spare' windshield that could be for sale or trade? Or if you want to grab the junkyard stash, I'll consider that too. I'm looking to replace my 'rock catcher'.
Would it be too much to ask about a NOS or uncracked seal?!?

Windshield & Seal

I may be able to help you on a windshield. Let me check my stock. On the windshield rubber....think about this. I have successfully and easily used the windshield rubber from a 79 bus. It is nearly the same in cross section. It has a slightly higher "hump" on the outside....but looks decent. The "american style" rubber from west coast would look even better...and is almost perfect...but you will have to deal with the insert locking strip. The cal-look rubber seals installs perfectly...but you will have to cut to length...and seal at the top.
Another method. Standard type 3 rubber will work very well...also cut to length. The problem is...that from the glass slot to the back lips...it is not as deep. What works great...is to get aluminum strip 1/8"-3/16" thick and 1/2" wide. Form it to the wall of the windshield channel...where those 4 little lips are...with a rubber mallet. Once it is perfect...this takes about an hour...drill a few small holes and pop rivet the strip onto the wall above the seal flange at the bottom. You have now added metal thickness...rather un-invasively, which will allow you to use standard type 3 seals available cheap. They seal perfectly and look great. Ray
