412 at junk yard!!!
That depends on who you talk to. As the blue book goes...(like anyone uses that anymore)...not really. Then again...in 1991...the type 3 was worth nothing to anyone. I bought my last 3 type 3's for $250...for all three! You would be hard pressed to get a beater for under 1500 these days. I think the 411/412 is the last frontier of volkswagon restoration/collection. From the number of questions from people just starting to get into the engines of these things...and starting to ask what vehicles it really came from, as more of us get cars restored and back on the road...I think the interest will skyrocket. I get offers from people who just think my car looks cool...all the time to buy it. My best offer so far...ugly primer at the moment and all has been about $8000. Ray

You don't know how lucky You are to have 411-412 VWs to restore. These Beautiful VWs (to Me) I have seen 5 in Australia since 1968...
all imported from either South Africa, New Guinea ,the U.K.or New Zealand...I have only just learnt that these cars were sold in New Zealand....strange When VW was actually making Beetles & type 3s here.... I have always wanted a 4 door Air Cooled VW......It wouldn't be practical here Now as there are NO parts available for them...I would have to import the parts from the US or the UK...
Anyway..I still enjoy looking at them...I saw in a UK Magazine that they were very expensive when New!!!compared to a type 3..
Best Wishes

If you want a serious project and all the car needs is a motor, I'd get the 'good' junk-yard price and get it running. You won't make any money for your effort, as always, but you'll have the most comfortable, roomiest aircooled ride around. (At least in your area)
Then you can show your friends what they are missing. It's not a beetle so don't be fooled into thinking you can mail order from major magazine advertisers, they don't want the hassles.
As I always say, don't expect any red-carpet treatment from your aircooled buddies. Just fly past them with 4 people in the car, then they'll quite down a bit.
A type 4, even with an automatic, will SCREAM past most other aircooled VW's.
You need to ask your significant other about 2 type 4's around the house, most likely you'll need a parts car. Or buy everything you can find for it, and have enough extra parts to make a parts car!!
Bottom line, you're in California, you've got more local parts than the other 49 combined. Ok, except Ohio, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, New York, I've never really found anything in Rhode Island or Delaware, but whatever.
