rear bearing SPACER?

Post by nick sparrow »

Hello all, I have just replaced the front wheel bearings on my 412LS (1974) and was about to do the rear ones as well, due to lots of noise coming from them. Now I know in the rear bearing set up you have a spacer and a few shims, firstly what is the spacer for?. Also does anyone know any dimensions for the spacer/shims, why do you need the shims as well?. I ask as my shims have selfdestructed over time and hence damaged the bearing races. On fitting new bearings can you NOT use the shims? Or if it is a precision fit, if so could I use slightly longer spacers made to length…?

Any help really welcomed…

rear bearing SPACER?

Post by ray greenwood »

Nick there are no shims needed in the rear bearings of the 412. This is probably the problem. The spacer is to allow proper preloading of the bearings without crushing the rollers too far. ...this is a torque vs. turning value given in all of the shop manuals. If you do not get the proper turning value at a given torque...the spacer is probably out of spec. That is actually quite rare. Get two new bearings for each side...not cheap. They only manufacture them in August from what I'm told...when most of the European factories are on vacation...and the temps and scabs run the assembly lines making seldom sold, limited run bearings....but they last forever when properly installed. The only shim is the spacer between the inner and outer bearing. Be absolutely sure the races are seated properly. Use high temp 500+ f drop point grease...new seals...and a torque wrench. Its not a huge ordeal. Let me know if you need help. I can measure a few spacers if need be. The shims may have been put in if someone used a way differnt bearing set...or the old one got worn becasue it was overtorqued. That is not to be done. Just get another spacer. Ray
