I am a diesel guy.
I found a '74 412 in very good condition needing a motor rebuild. Where can I get any rebuild kits for the 412 motor? It burns oil and has bad rings. Beetle engine parts are everywhere new, but cannot find nuthin on the 411/412 motor.

Most of us have spare parts. You can get bearings and oil seals in Seattle, and other parts like rings in Tacoma. E-mail what you want, and most of us can help you find it. I have a few new injectors left, does it have L jetronic or D jetronic injection? You can have the crank ground at any good machine shop. (ask people you know whose good) If the shop doesn't know your crank specs, find someone else to do the job. One of the more difficult parts to find, are those little spacers under the Distributor, so don't lose them when you open the block. A great little book to have is the How to Rebuild Your Air Cooled Engine. I used it and it was invaluable. (I had never rebuilt before.)
This should be a fun project. Stay connected to this site and you will get all the help you could ever need. Ray Greenwood is an encyclopedia of type 4 info and so is Roland Kunz, and Cliff. Keep us posted.

boy, seattle is far... I am in Quebec...
Hard thing to do is how can I justify the car? I have a 1984 Jetta that I restored, with a turbo-diesel (68hp) 1.6. (original was 1.7 gas) and I have a 1967 Buick GS400 that I also restored, albeit with a 455 cubic inch (7.5L) with some 330hp, net.
The crank should be fine, only the piston rings appear to be bad.

It is just a 1.8 liter type 4 bus motor, (same parts). If you can do it yourself just get Jake Rubies video from aircooled.net they also have all the parts you need for a rebuild.
type 4 cylinders and pistons and rings.
type 4 gasket set.
main cam and rod bearings.
Have Rimco rebuild the heads -- about 180
Get the type 4 video by Jake before you order anything it will realy let you know what you need.
You could just try an put a new top end on it the bottoms are known to be pretty bullet proof. cylynder head kits are about $300 and head rebuilds are about 180 from Rimco.
